BILL TABLED FOR KNESSET ELECTORAL REFORM

APRIL/2008:  For the first time in Israel’s history, there is a glimmer of hope for electoral reform of the Knesset.

Through the initiatives of four highly motivated MK’s, a bill has been tabled calling for 60 members of the Knesset to be elected IN 60 single member districts. with the remaining 60 to be chosen as today.

There is no doubt that you who signed our petitions and got others to sign helped this happen.  We in CEPAC have been patiently collecting signatures on petitions. We were never sure what this could accomplish, only that we felt that we had to do something to involve the public and to bridge the gap between the government and the people.

Perhaps we were naïve in believing that the public support that we were receiving would translate into action for government reform.  We were totally disheartened when over 100,000 persons demonstrated in the Rabin Square, immediately after the War in Lebanon and nothing moved.

Admittedly we were not sure how to proceed and full credit goes to Gil Hoffman of the Jerusalem Post who sensing some favorable interest in the Knesset encouraged us to meet with members of the Knesset.  We picked up the challenge and realizing that our only hope for change was through the Knesset itself, we began to lobby members of the Knesset from various parties.

WHAT A MARVELOUS GIFT THIS COULD BE FOR OUR 60TH ANNIVERSARY; ONE REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR EACH YEAR.

These courageous sponsors are:

  • M.K. Ophir Pines Paz
  • M.K. Gideon Saar
  • M.K. Eitan Cabel
  • M.K. Menahem Ben Sasson
We hope that many other M.K.’s who have expressed interest will join them, some of whom we ha e met or intend to meet.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!

  • Send letters to all M.K.s urging them to support  this vital legislation for the sake of our future as a truly democratic state.
  • If you are involved in a political party, be sure that your party supports regional representation…and give backing only to those who do.  Certainly even on a party ballot, you should not be voting for any potential M.K.s who do not support this.
  • Continue to sign up petitions.
This is a historical opportunity to return the government to the people! We urge you to be a part of  it.
